What is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is a modern image format based on the HEVC (H.265) video codec and standardised by MPEG in 2015. Apple adopted HEIC as the default photo capture format in iOS 11 (2017) and macOS High Sierra, so every iPhone and recent iPad automatically saves photos as .heic files instead of JPG. HEIC offers roughly twice the compression efficiency of JPG at equivalent visual quality, supports 16-bit color depth, alpha-channel transparency, multiple images per container (burst photos, depth maps, thumbnails), and HDR — all in a file about half the size of a comparable JPG.

Despite these advantages, HEIC has a compatibility problem outside the Apple ecosystem. Most Windows versions need a HEIF codec extension, Android support is inconsistent across vendors, many image editors and content management systems cannot open .heic files, and most web browsers historically could not decode HEIC natively.
